Story: The quiet, tame life of former boxing champion Adonis 'Donnie' Creed (Michael B. Jordan) takes an unexpected turn when his childhood friend Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors) shows up after 18 years.
Review: A fateful event robs Damian of the life he envisioned for himself as a future boxing champion. Armed with past regrets, lost years, rejection issues and hot anger, she returns with a restless desire to reclaim what is rightfully hers. With the clock ticking, he sees nothing wrong with storming professional boxing and taking out everyone in his path, including his best friend Creed. The latter allows his troubled friend until he begins to see the implications and motives behind Damian's return. Now more of a star maker looking for new talent, Creed is forced to come out of retirement and step into the ring to face his unfair and powerful friend-turned-foe.
Boxing movie bible Rocky may be impossible to top, but the Creed spin-off series was nothing short of amazing. Despite the fact that Sylvester Stallone leaves as an actor from the third episode and presents Creed III only as a producer, you will not miss anything. When the end credits roll, you'll be surprised to discover that Michael B. Jordan is making his directorial debut with Creed III and handling it with the mind of a seasoned filmmaker.
If you know that sports movies have a rags to riches, underdog rise formula, writer Ryan Coogler goes deeper. He presents a psychological conflict between two people that is deeply personal and yet universal. His story goes beyond boxing and explores class differences, past trauma and its long-term effects. It closely observes the complexities of human nature, when right and wrong are subjective. There is no greater regret than wasted time, and that is at the bottom of the conflict here. For Creed, boxing is not violence. It's all about timing and control. For Damian, boxing is the only ticket to redemption. The meeting of these two as rivals is extremely exciting.
Kramer Morgenthau's absorbing music, especially when filming the matches, Joseph Shirley's music and sound details are remarkable. The actors elevate the film further by embodying their characters. Michael B. Jordan is perfect as Creed, but Jonathan Majors' troubled and dark Damian will stay with you long after the movie is over. He makes sure that his character exudes the mysterious ghostly energy that Joel Edgerton shone with in The Gift. Tessa Thompson is still part of Creed.
It doesn't matter if you've seen the first two episodes or not. Creed III also works as a standalone film that deserves to be seen on the big screen. There is not a single dull moment, although the film is quite predictable.
