Review: After watching Mother, I can't help but wonder why Jennifer Lopez agreed to take part in this project. Despite Jennifer Lopez's admirable performance, the film offers little salvation. Sophisticated action sequences and intense firepower keep audiences engaged, but other than that, it's a hastily written work. There are huge gaps in the script and we often take the plot as it is. The Mother follows a formulaic approach and offers nothing you've never seen before. The mesmerizing scenes shot in the wilderness of Cuba and Alaska might grab your attention for a moment, but overall it's a disappointing waste of time.
This action her thriller delves into the life of a formidable ex-sniper mother (Jennifer Lopez), who honed her terrifying skills while serving in the US Army on operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. While in Afghanistan, she meets former SAS agent Adrian Lovell (played by Joseph Fiennes), who works part-time in the illegal arms trade and smuggling. She introduces LaBelle to the cunning Hector Alvarez (played by Gael García Bernal), and together they succeed in building a formidable empire in the dangerous fields of arms and human trafficking. But when her mother discovers her evil intentions, she soon turns against her former criminal buddies. Meanwhile, one of her arms dealers gets her pregnant, further complicating her predicament. Her mother's daughter Zoe's life is tragically threatened as Hector and Adrian seek revenge.
"The Mother" starts off well, but eventually falls into a predictable pattern. The plot attempts to evoke sympathy for the character of Jennifer Lopez, who struggles to reveal her true identity to her daughter but somehow fails to resonate with viewers. One of her biggest flaws in the film is in the characterization of the two villains. Little is revealed about their origins, other than the fact that one is always chasing after her mother and the other is taking her kidnapped daughter to safety in a Cuban villa. Their robotic demeanor lacks the menacing presence and complexity you'd expect from someone truly mischievous. Jennifer Lopez carries the weight of her films with her commendable performances and action scenes. The outstanding performance in this film is solely due to Jennifer Lopez as an unnamed character. She embodies both action-packed sequences and emotional scenes with her convincing. Unfortunately, Gael García Bernal is criminally underused in the role of Hector Alvarez. Joseph Fiennes appears indifferent throughout the film, with only one expression on his face. Zoe, played by Lucy Paez, and Omari Hardwick, who plays main character Cruz, manage to keep the film from further collapse. The Cuban part, where the mother chases Hector's minions, is visually nuanced, and the scenic beauty of Alaska is brought to life beautifully on screen. Despite the involvement of three writers, the film fails to capitalize on Lopez's talent. It also includes some pretty incredible scenes, like Lopez trying to eliminate one of Hector's buddies in a school park full of kids, which no sane sniper would do. It's a decision. Ultimately, 'The Mother' remains a must-see thanks to Jennifer Lopez's captivating presence.
