Bird Box Barcelona Review: This Post-apocalyptic Horror Mystery Is An Evolving Watch

Bird Box Barcelona Movie Rating: 6/10 ⭐

Story: After a mysterious force wipes out most of humanity, Sebastian and his daughter Anna struggle to survive on the streets of Barcelona. They join forces with other survivors to escape the unknown threats and  unseen creatures that haunt them.

Review: It's important to note that Bird Box: Barcelona is a spin-off, not a sequel to the movie Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock. Like its predecessor, parenthood and grief are central themes in this film. However, Birdbox "Barcelona" introduces a new story that builds on the original concept without providing a detailed explanation, assuming the viewer is familiar with the original film. Suzanne Bier's films were full of intrigue and suspense, but this spinoff falls a little short of expectations. Bird Box: Barcelona also draws inspiration from recent blockbusters such as A Quiet Place and The Last of Us, with their spooky and unsettling moments. The film highlights an invisible threat that keeps survivors  on edge. This mystery movie should be viewed with caution as it incorporates religion into its dystopian narrative. It's only an hour after the movie starts that he finds out what happened to  the main character, Sebastian. As in the original film, he tracks a group of survivors in search of escape and  safe haven. The film deals with a disturbing urge to self-destruct, with some survivors forcing others to open their eyes and embrace the person they perceive as their savior. In this depiction, blindfolded people move through the streets of Barcelona trying to survive.

The film centers on former engineer Sebastian (Mario Casas) and his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) as they navigate the dangerous streets of Barcelona while dodging mysterious threats. In this dystopian nightmare, Sebastian's only mission is to protect his daughter at all costs. Unknown to others, Sebastian encounters a mysterious "creature" and manages to keep this knowledge a secret from those he meets on his travels. Along the way, they meet a diverse group of survivors, including psychologist Claire (Georgina Campbell), German girl Sofia (Naira Schubert), and pizza delivery boy Octavio (Diego Calva). The only means of escape is to seek refuge at Montjuïc Castle, accessible only by cable car.

Bird Box: Barcelona is known for the commendable performances of its cast. Mario Casas, who plays the distraught and worried father, does a great job covering the character of Sandra Bullock in Bird Box. Mario's role in the film is marked by complexity and narrative twists that make his character fresh and unique. Georgina Campbell gives a natural and compelling performance as chaos victim Claire.

Aside from Sebastian's journey, many elements of the film feel dated and dated. It borrows heavily from various dystopian movies and series I've seen over the past few years. The film ends with  a suggested sequel, suggesting that more Bird Box stories are in the works. This horror-crime thriller is good in many ways, but it's not really what we can stand for when it comes to writing style and character development. The narrative moves back and forth between the past and the present to create a compelling narrative. However, the lack of a mysterious creature in the film gives Bird Box: Barcelona more of a psychological thriller feel and unfortunately lacks momentum. Ultimately, the film fails to break new ground and is a rather disappointing experience.
