Scream VI Movie Review: A Stunning, Stronger Sequel To Last Year's Reboot

Scream VI 2023 Movie Review

Scream VI Movie Rating: 8/10 ⭐

StoryWhen sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter move from Woodsboro to New York City, a new Ghostface follows them. Accused of being a hitman, Sam discovers the dark side due to her lineage when a killer targets her core four (her sisters and twins Chad and Mindy). Will the four teenagers and their friends survive? And what is Ghostface's motivation behind the murder spree?

ReviewWhen the Scream franchise returns in 2022 with a reboot after more than a decade, it was hailed by fans and critics as the best watch ever. Sequels often fall short of the expectations and high quality of the original outing set. Not so with volume two, directed by Matt Vetinelli-Orpin and Tyler Gillette. This one is more intense in its content and treatment. Whereas in the previous game the killer was a stub fanatic, this time around it's not so flimsy. There's a connection between Samantha (Melissa Barrera) and her half-sister Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), and why Ghostface keeps killing. and sets the tone for the rest of the movie, so it shows that this movie means business. It's refreshing to see that this isn't a clichéd situation where female victims stay home alone, respond to the calls of the sick, and become victims of their carnage. A film studies professor is rescued, and the sequence that follows is well done.

Despite the fair amount of blood and gore, Scream VI is no clueless slasher. There's a meta reference, and the intriguing bit is where Sam is constantly reminded of her legacy, as she's the daughter of OG Woodsboro Ghostface killer Billy Loomis, as well as a glimpse into the dark side. The many kills and action sequences while trying to escape keep you in suspense. With the subway sequence leaving Mindy (Jasmine Savoy Brown) and Ethan (Jack Champion) behind, the Halloween environment is very chaotic. , feels like suffocating. Fans of the

franchise will be delighted to see Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) appear and now be FBI agents. Leading roles Melissa Bellera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmine Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding (as Chad Meeks-Martin) all deliver commendable performances, while the rest of the cast provides good support. The banter and snappy interactions between characters (like Gale and Kirby) elicit some laughs and don't feel forced.

At 123 minutes, the film is limp in places, sluggish in many places and undermines the narrative's sense of urgency. The theatricality of the finale, which is a tribute to the movie "Stub", is the best. The climax is a bit messy, so trimming it a bit would have had more impact. The film stays suspenseful until the end, and when Ghostface's true identity is revealed, it's surprising, but no less emotional.

Overall, Scream VI is a stronger, if not perfect, sequel to Reboot. Blood and action are delivered effectively so you never have to worry about missing a loophole. Gore and horror fans will enjoy this ride.
