Review: DCI John Luther made his big screen debut in "Luther: The Sun Has Fallen" and it's sad to see the character fail to live up to his potential, making the film a harrowing experience. Although the film shows promise early on, it ultimately leaves viewers unsatisfied. Maybe it's the format of the series or the inclusion of outlandish elements that leave audiences scratching their heads. The film feels more like a shortened version of the six-episode BBC series, which includes several Hollywood hits such as "Seven", the "Saw" franchise and "The Bone Collector". A central problem with the plot is its lack of believability, and die-hard fans can only hope that Luther's upcoming appearance in the BBC series will solve those problems.
At times this two hour plus feature feels boring and fails to engage the audience. Andy Serkis' weird hairdo and bad acting can be comical in some scenes. Unfortunately, the film does a disservice to the character, who was first introduced in 2010. Filled with clichés and often pointless action sequences, the film does not provide a clear explanation of the villain's motives. It's obvious that the film was rushed to capitalize on DCI John Luther's popularity, and the lack of attention to detail is glaring. The least the makers could do is give Luther new clothes after he drowned in freezing cold water in the Norwegian Arctic. They could be added "scary" as part of his ways.
The story begins when cleaner Callum Aldrich receives a threatening phone call from an unnamed man who demands that he come to a certain location or risk revealing his secret. Upon arrival, Callum is kidnapped by a man who turns out to be serial killer David Robey. Robey enjoys blackmailing his victims by exposing their illegal online deals. When DCI John Luther takes over the case, Robey ensures that Luther's entire past is exposed, leading to his dismissal from the department and imprisonment. While in prison, Luther hears a pre-recorded conversation from an FM station and believes he can solve the case. With the help of an old friend, he bravely escapes from prison and begins his research, which eventually leads him to the frozen environment of Norway.
Idris Elba delivers a strong performance with his brooding looks and adds an imposing physical presence to the series. He, along with Cynthia Erivo as DCI Odette and Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk, John's former boss, are the redeeming factor. However, the same cannot be said for David Robey's portrayal of Andy Serkis. Serkis' potential is underutilized and his character is a caricature with a terrible hairstyle and exaggerated mannerisms. The plot holes in her character's episodes are significant and leave viewers wondering what the writers were thinking. "Luther: The Fallen Sun" falls short of the original BBC series with an unlikely plot that will disappoint die-hard fans of the series.
