Parastree Movie Rating: 4/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story: Parastree, which translates roughly to "Paramour" in English, is an Indo-Nepali film that revolves around a man's depraved fetish and his wife's extramarital affair.
Review: The illegitimate condition has been done to death in Indian films, but along come filmmakers who feel they have something more to offer - namely lust and dare we say, necrophilia! A wedding on the rocks involving the attractive and alluring Aavya (Shilpa Maskkey) and the demented Biswas (Jhaken BC) turns into a sick story of abuse, jealousy and murder. While the husband is away at work, infidelity plays out at home when young Aayan (Gaurav Bista) proposes to Aavya at a local gym. He makes romantic overtures to a disappointed woman on a radio show he hosts and manages to take her with his bullet to the hills, where one of the film's two forgettable songs unfolds. The river and rock background to the cliched lyrics of "Aankon mein ho tu" seems like a throwback to old cinema music. But then the film suddenly returns to the story, where a love triangle leads to revelation and outrage, which in turn leads to a bloody outcome. What could have been a better film is let down by bad performances. The passion on display leaves something to be desired, and the dialogue feels boring at times, especially when the characters stray from offensive English. Love is presented a little better than hate, but most of the words and gestures are disappointing. The use of mirrors as a motif to convey emotion ranges from the inspiring to the ridiculous. The modest production features and predictable script don't help much either. The music is perfectly acceptable, which ideally should be strong because it is a crime and passion story. Overall, Parastree is predictable and not very original. If you have two hours to kill and you like twisted sex fetishes and gore, Parastree might be for you. But like most mediocre Hindi films, it lacks any real emotional resonance. Participate at your own risk.
