Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story: Both belong to rich Delhi families. Rohan Arora (Ranbir Kapoor) is smitten with Nisha Malhotra (Shraddha Kapoor) the moment he sees her during their holiday in Spain. These two hit it off right away, but love these days has a way of complicating things.
Review: While Sonu, Titu, Sweety moved away from the 2018 hit Luv Ranjan, the director is stepping up the extra game in Tu JhoothiMain Makkaar. You have to spend most of the movie to find out if Ranbir's name is Rohan, Miki or Jeetender. Turns out he has several names and so does the leading lady. Shraddha is Nisha and Tinny and has a best friend named Kinny (Monica Chaudhary) or something.
Ranbir has a co-star in Anubhav Singh Bass. In addition to running the family businesses, the boys also act as relationship gurus, sidelining the breakup service. They offer packages (platinum costs 2 lakhs) for people who need help ending a relationship. It's all fun and games until Mickey's knowledge comes back to bite him in the ass.
In the recent past, there has not been a film with such different two sides. The first half is a remake of Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha (Corsica chapter). The second becomes a Barjatya-Karan Johar and Priyadarshan story set in the universe of Luv Ranjan. The first half features breathtaking beaches, alluring swimwear and the foot-stomping youth anthem 'Tere Pyaar Mein'. Everything is easy on the eye, but pointless. The characters are not fleshed out enough, forcing the audience to read between the lines and it feels tedious.
Kartik Aaryan's wonderful cameo provides the momentum as the second half of the film takes a dramatic turn and becomes a fun family entertainer with a great airport climax. Women are not the enemy here. Miki is surrounded by a progressive mother (Dimple Kapadia), a supportive sister (Hasleen Kaur) and an independent girlfriend (Shraddha). He is a clingy and talkative boyfriend. Luv Ranjan, mostly known for making patriarchal films, moves away from this territory to focus on the perils of modern dating. "Tujhe Pyaar Karna does time pass?" Mickey asks Tinny in advance so that neither of them wastes time. They fall in love faster than you think and talk about anything and everything except important things. More talking, less listening. Engagement or battle of the sexes is not the issue here; communication is Can Mickey make tough choices for Tinny and vice versa? We want to stop things instead of fixing them… taking is refreshing.
Ranbir Kapoor is at his best when he attempts a broken character. His silence speaks volumes. Here he steps into new territory that Kartik Aaryan has mastered over the years. He adapts well to frothy romance, excessive talk and constant monologues. It's possibly the most he's spoken in the film so far, and it's interesting to watch how it changes his personality. He looks good with Shraddha but the chemistry needs work. Shraddha looks irrepressible and sizzling on screen this time. Dimple Kapadia and Hasleen Kaur stand out. Boney Kapoor has very little to do.
Tu Jhoothi Chief Sausage has humor and heart in place. Character builds miss the mark due to duration.
