Virupaksha Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story: Surya (Sai Dalam Tej) travels to his mother's village, Rudravanam, and immediately falls in love with Nandini (Samukta). But beyond utopia, the village seems to hide a dark secret.
Review: Karthik Varma Dandu (with a script written by Sukumar) pulls off an effective horror movie in Virupaksha. He soon reveals that this is going to be a tough story if you're a squeamish person, thanks to the copious amount of blood. I can't deny that you are. It's the 1990s. However, some people still rely on ancient texts to determine right and wrong, and fall into superstitions with fatal consequences. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) returns to her mother's village of Rudravanam to prepare for Modamamba Thalli Jatara. Village Sarpanch Harishandra Prasad (Rajiv Kanakara) and the rest of the village are busy with preparations. When Surya meets Sirpanch's daughter, Nandini (Samyukta), he falls deeply in love with her. These two and another couple in the village seem trapped in romance, but the past seems to be knocking.A series of events lead to multiple deaths, and Surya tries to find out the cause. Virupaksha got off to a good start. It shows how terrible decisions were made in a place full of fear and superstition in the 1970s. But in the 1990s, everything looks safe and sound. Surya and her mother spend a lot of time with their cousin (Shyamala) and other villagers. The first half of the movie is pretty fast-paced, except when you need a breather from death to focus on your romance. Dialogue sounds more emotional than it actually is. It makes you impatient, but it pays off. The second half of the movie takes a turn. And while the film shines when it comes to focusing on the story at hand, some parts may feel slow. so you can get the gist of it. Could the climax have been better? safety. But even without devouring explanations, everything suddenly seems to make sense. Virupaksha is a well made movie. The film has a breathtaking atmosphere that draws you in. It kind of makes you cringe, but at the same time you don't want to look away. Thanks to the crew, too. The sound design that sets the mood for most of the scenes is outstanding, as is the background music by Ajaneesh Loknath. Shandat's cinematography is also very good, as is Kartik's direction. Best of all, the film contains jump scares, but it doesn't rely solely on them. Sai Dharam Tej is most often given roles that require his cool, and he pulls it off even when he's thrown in the middle of something big. Samyuktha gets a character that gives her acting leeway and she does it well. Actors such as Sai Her Chand, Brahmaji, Ajay, Rajeev Her Kanakara and Shyamala play their roles very effectively. There is a fine line between promoting superstition and telling stories about people being superstitious. There may be moments in Virupaksha that make you wonder if the creators follow this lineage...but in most of the films, they are so engrossed that they surrender themselves to the vision. That's the win.
