Ugram Movie Review: Allali Naresh Shines In This Captivating Crime Thriller

Ugram Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐

Storyline: CI Shiva Kumar (Allali Naresh) is a brazen police officer who often causes trouble at work and at home. What will happen when the consequences of his actions catch up with him?

Flashback: Director Vijay Kanakamedara and Arali Naresh will be working together for the second time after Nandi in Ugram. While the first  focused on police brutality, the second tells the personal story of a  particular police officer and was written by Tuum Venkat and provided dialogue by Abu Buri Ravi.  Police officer Shiva Kumar (Allali Naresh) walks a lonely road with his wife Aparna (Mirna) and his child Lucky. Aparna no longer wants to live with him because his job, which is often associated with disappearances, has put a heavy strain on their married life. He seems to prioritize his work over relationships and she seems fed up by now. When theirs had  a serious accident, he rushed her to her hospital. But the next day, the family is nowhere to be found. Can the mystery be solved while suffering from an intractable disease? Vijay wastes no time and jumps right into action. It feels like something is going wrong from the beginning, but it really isn't. The staging, lighting, colors, etc. of the fight scenes are really interesting and that's the best part of the movie, even if it's overdone. The storyline is also very interesting, especially when it comes to Shiva and her spirituality. Ugram is compelling, but unfortunately the story is banal. There are very few really boring moments in this movie. When it comes to  writing, Ugram seems to lack Nandi's emotional impetus. No matter how much the characters cry onscreen, the hook isn't there. Ultimately, the only character you care about  is Shiva. Some  scenes could have used a little more subtlety, especially in the way they were presented onscreen. On the other hand, some films are treated with more sensitivity than you would expect from a Telugu film. Unfortunately, some scenes are unintentionally funny. The music by Sricharan Pakala (minus his Albela Albela, which comes out of nowhere) and cinematography by Siddharth J are very clever and accentuate the film's narrative. Arali Naresh handles most roles well. He's good at playing a frantic cop desperate to find his family, especially when he beats people up mercilessly. But there are times when it makes me cringe. Mirna plays her given role well. Indraja, Sharath Rohitaswa and others do well in their respective roles. 'Ugram' is the kind of movie you can enjoy if you're looking for a decent thriller without expecting too much. For the Nandi duo, the film is worth watching.
