The Little Mermaid Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story: The live-action remake of the 1989 Disney animated classic follows Ariel (Hal Bailey), a young mermaid who captivates people and changes their lives.
Review: King Triton (Javier Bardem) rules the Seven Seas with his daughters, but one of them has other interests. Ariel has his head above the water. She collects jewelry and crafts from people in the countryside, but she often gets into trouble because of her curiosity. She falls in love with Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) after she rescues him from being thrown overboard in a storm, much to her father's dismay. The only rule he enforced was to banish mermaids from the human world, and in a fit of rage Triton destroyed Ariel's prized collection. A troubled mermaid makes a pact with the evil Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), promising to give Ariel human legs so she can walk on land in exchange for her enchanting voice. But it contained a nasty clause. If Ariel doesn't kiss her true love within three days, the sea witch will trap her forever. Halle Bailey's amazing singing talent is immediately apparent, and hearing her perform the classic "Part of Your World" makes her cast a complete convincing one. Bailey brings to life the right mix of Ariel's fish-out-of-water naivety and charming spirit. Her chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King's Prince Eric is also compelling, but it's also due to his decision to give his character more backstory. Their unlikely romance runs deeper than ever, but it also comes with pacing issues exacerbated by the song. There are also extended and newer versions of the classic. This puts a strain on the narrative flow of the film, especially in the first act. Another concern is the use of sketchy CGI. This often takes us away from the underwater experience, especially in recent movies where the bar is set relatively high in this regard. Luckily, supporting characters like grumpy crab Sebastian (voiced by David Diggs) and eager seagull Scuttle (voiced by Awkwafina) provide just enough humor to propel the story forward. Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy justify their respective roles as Triton and Ursula with their immense talent. But you can't help but appreciate the stunning photorealistic design of one-time favorite Flounder (voiced by Jacob Tremblay). Disney's live-action remakes of classic catalogs have had mixed results in the past, but The Little Mermaid benefits most from this generational remake. While it doesn't quite capture the same magical essence as the original, all is not lost in Rob Marshall's interpretation. This is largely due to Hal Bailey's outstanding performance.
