Beau Is Afraid review: Beau is weird, ambitious and exhausting

Beau Is Afraid Movie Rating: 7.5/10 ⭐⭐+

Description: Bo (Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely, middle-aged man who takes anxiety pills and fears his seedy neighborhood and the world at large. He lives off his mother's credit card. On his way to  his mother, he encounters a series of unusual events.

Review: Unable to distinguish fact from fiction, dream from reality, Bo is haunted by horrific, suspicious and bizarre events with mysterious motives. Will he be able to withstand these myriad attacks and suffering? Is someone doing this to him or is he doing this to himself? Is the man a victim, or does he just want to play the victim? This movie leaves a lot of questions and possibilities. The film teeters between a domineering mother, a penis monster, a suicidal lunatic, a decomposing corpse, a naked escape, and a maddening and near-absurd criminal. But it wouldn't be Ari Aster if it wasn't incredibly quirky, disorienting, shockingly bizarre, and gave you plenty of "what the hell" moments. Writer-director, he is one of New Age's greatest talents who revolutionized his genre with his  two critically acclaimed films, Hereditary and Midsommar. One person. His ability to transform tragedy, trauma, guilt and sadness into terror is amazing. His stories lack the usual jump scares and tropes that the genre requires. This man is a die-hard rule-breaker and frontier worker, and prepares you to immerse yourself in his absurd world rooted in paranoia and troubled characters. "Beau Is Afraid" is similar, but crosses the line of madness. A whopping three hours of his tedious psychological drama is overdone as he unwittingly unfolds across three tracks. Whether his suffering was real or imaginary, a memory or a bad dream, that's the mystery you're trying to unravel. The underlying tragedy "Beau is afraid to face his controlling mother" is the climax, coming a little later. Despite Joaquin Phoenix's bewildering performance, the painfully long wait isn't all that rewarding. The actor becomes one with his character's terrifying journey, but he feels overwhelmed by his responsibilities in the absence of a clear plot. Ari Aster is amplifying his madness with his latest closed-space thriller, but it's too long, ambitious and exhausting.
