Barbie Movie Review: It's Not Plastic, It's Awesome

Barbie Movie Rating: 8/10 ⭐

Story: At Barbieland, things start to change for Barbie (Margot Robbie)  and she has to give up her perfect life to make ends meet.

Review: From a practical point of view, Barbieland is perfect. Various versions of Barbie and Ken live happy lives without knowing the real world. But when the archetypal Barbie (Margot Robbie) gets an unusual idea, another Barbie (Kate McKinnon) directs her to delve into the human world  and deal with existential crises. But chaos ensues when Ken (Ryan Gosling) joins in on this quest. Barbie's rendition is perfectly combined with the costumes, art and set design to immerse us in Barbieland, which is rich in colorful characters, mainly in pastel colors, especially pink. When performed by an ensemble, some get very busy, while others are relegated to the background. This is intentional, but some of these characters are somewhat redundant, if not annoying. Margot Robbie is perfectly cast in the lead role, reminding us of her incredible depth and breadth as the lead character Barbie. Ryan Gosling is a scene thief, whose Ken is the rare bastard who provides laughs effortlessly, often at his own expense. But the ace of the team is America Ferrera, who impresses in particular with a striking monologue that perfectly captures the complex conundrum of women's equality. Now let's focus on the  most important aspect of this film: the script. Representing prominent feminist positions, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach deftly walk the tricky tightrope  of writing a to-the-point, confident script while  thoroughly entertaining. There are comedic and musical interludes that keep the audience engaged, and the message is deliberately clumsy. Sure, it raises the question of who this movie is aimed at, but 'Barbie' certainly isn't just for those who play with these dolls. Full of satire that eventually sheds  its surface, this film firmly takes the bull's horns of patriarchy. It's a big gamble for toy maker Mattel, but Gerwig's style combines her staging with substance, and there's no doubt that Barbie dolls will sneak up front row at award shows, making Barbie dolls the company's money maker. Destroy any argument that there is.
