Meg 2: Trench Tales: A research team dives into uncharted waters to discover new species. But a mining operation thwarts their mission, and the crew must survive hordes of megalodon (prehistoric sharks) and outwit ravenous corporate raiders.
Meg 2: The Trench Review: The movie prequel Meg (2018) was a cheesy movie that reminded me of cult movies like Jaws and Jurassic Park. For this film, director Jon Turteltaub handed over directing to Ben Wheatley. The canvas is bigger and the threats are meaner, but Meg 2: Trench doesn't make the most of it, failing to live up to its strengths or live up to its potential. After all, it's a generic creature feature with a predictable premise and stereotypical characters. The film begins with a battle between gigantic creatures such as a lizard-crocodile hybrid, a Tyrannosaurus and a titular megalodon, and moves on to Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), an environmental warrior who fights alone against a group of Earth. Monster villains dump toxic waste into the ocean. It determines the atmosphere of the movie and allows us to predict what will happen. But things get tense when billionaire oceanographic research owner Jiu-min (Wu Jing) proves his bond with imprisoned Meg. Soon after, the crew embarks on a reconnaissance mission, encountering bioluminescent flora, fauna and mysterious animals. Things go downhill when their mission is thwarted. The part where they fight for survival and arrive at a rescue station three kilometers away in high-tech suits is exciting and well-acted. But soon the storytelling tanks liked their ships. The plot gets complicated when the group has to deal with terrorist villains, a lizard crocodile, Meg's group, and a giant octopus! There's some cheesy humor from crew members like McKryde (Cliff Curtis). A fun island appears out of nowhere, bathers are vacationing and need a rescue, but it adds to the length of the film without adding too much plot. The performance is nothing special, and Jason Statham doesn't look like he's doing his best in this performance either. The scene with Jiu Min's niece Shuya Sophia Kai is only occasionally heartwarming. Sea-swimming Mega often looks unconventional, but the main fight is well done. It's not a monster masterpiece, but if you're looking for cheap fun, Meg 2: The Trench will do just fine.
