Talk To Me Movie Review: Repurposing Assets for the Current Generation

Talk To Me Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐

Story: A group of teenagers succumbed to their curiosity about communicating with spirits, only to discover they were chewing on more than they could chew.

Review: Mia (Sophie Wilde), Jade (Alexandra Jensen), and her  brother Riley (Joe Byrd) must discover the hard way that playing with the supernatural  never goes wrong. Mia quickly develops a drug-like obsession while goofing around with what appears to be a powerful psychic's ceramic hands. Having recently lost her mother and struggling with a lack of bond with her father, Mia becomes possessed by her hand, putting her and her friends in great danger. Combining psychedelics with psychedelics is a smart move by director brothers Danny and Michael Philippou. Danny Philippou is co-writer with Bill Hintzman, and the two use the familiar ball possession motif to give the horror subgenre a fresh twist. The concept resonates  with  young characters played by relatively newcomers who make a series of bad decisions. The performers understand their duties and each is a powerful asset to the group, but the group does not understand the magnitude of their actions. Dealing with Mia's emotional turmoil is vital to the story, and Sophie Wilde is ready to take the audience into the darkness of her heart. And you can't help but empathize with Riley, played by Joe Byrd. Riley remembers his boyhood self. Miranda Otto shows her expertise as Jade's mother doing her best to stay one step ahead of these teenagers. The pacing can be very sharp and nerve-wracking, but the third act loses some of the momentum of the previous act. But Danny and Michael Philippow use mind games instead of cheesy jump scares, relying on harrowing emotions like guilt, grief, loneliness, and despair to carry out the death penalty. However, please be careful with some Gore expressions. It's understandable, but it can be off-putting for those who want less gore in the horror parts. Still, "Talk to Me" has enough elements to become a  cult hit.
