Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Movie Review: This mesmerizing entertainer carries a meaningful message

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐

Story of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani: Opposites attract and Rocky, a loud and colorful Punjabi boy, and Rani, an educated Bengali TV news anchor, fall in love. When their families object to the relationship, they come up with a plan - they live in each other's homes for three months before taking their relationship to the next level.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Review: Dance Number Featuring Bollywood Stars - Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor and Ananya Pandey with Ranveer Singh. Colorful, entertaining, light and glam, the film has all the vibes of a Karan Johar film, but underneath it all is a message and a meaning. It gently tackles deep rooted issues like patriarchy, gender bias, misogyny, body shaming and the culture of cancellation in our society. But all this is told with finesse and clarity in the story, without abandoning the impulse of humor or demanding the full attention of the script. Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) is the flamboyant scion of Dhanlaxmi (Jaya Bachchan), a mithai tycoon from a successful family. Rocky wants to trigger the memories of his amnesiac grandfather Kanwal (Dharmendra) by reuniting him with his wife from the past, Jamini Chatterjee (Shabana Azmi), who is also the thakuma (grandmother) of Rani (Alia Bhatt). To do this, he meets the intelligent and educated Rani, and although their personalities are dramatically different, love blossoms through song, dance, and lots of fun. The film is also about the clash of cultures and personalities and describes how judgmental and contemptuous people can be towards each other. Melodrama and tears abound, all in KJo's exuberant style. Top notch music, with one of the highlights being a mix of Bollywood classics through a beautifully old world encounter and Rocky-Ran new age romances. The film is also full of self-references - matriarch Jaya Bachchan emphatically says, "Bas, keh diya!" to the Amitabh Bachchan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, "Rahul, naam toh suna hi hoga" and "It's all about loving your family" will delight fans of KJo films. Ranveer Singh is perfectly cast as a loud yet loving and sensitive Punjabi. Myopic on gender equality due to familial and social conditioning, he has the film's funniest one-liners, which he delivers with aplomb, and handles an impressive cast of characters with finesse. Alia Bhatt shines as a fiery and confident girl and impresses in emotional scenes. But a better command of the Bengali accent would have helped. Jaya Bachchan proves her mettle from K3G's intelligent wife to intelligent and domineering matriarch in this outing. Be it mercilessly humiliating Rani Chandan's (Tota Roy Chowdhury) father in public or being insecure about Jamin, the veteran actor creates a multi-dimensional character. Shabana Azmi understands the play perfectly and is in tune with her when she switches between Bengali and Hindi. Dharmendra is adorable and excels in a short but effective role. Aamir Bashir also gives a powerful performance as Tijor, Rocky's misogynistic father who is overpowered by his mother. Namit Das as Rani's colleague Soumen entertains and carries himself well. Pritam's music is striking and has bands like What Jhumka? and Dhindhora Baja Re and the romantic Tum Kya Mile, all the songs are lavishly and beautifully recorded. Dola Re Dola Redux is sure to surprise and get a lot of applause from the viewers. Manush Nandan shows his prowess as a director of photography and visually the film is glamorous and bright in every scene, even if one wonders why a TV news anchor appears dressed as a Rani. Ishita Moitra's witty and rib-tickling dialogues are worth mentioning. Rocky says take Rani doli, she must be equal to Rajamouli. The story takes time to build, the first half is slow and the scenes drag on, but the second half moves on. There's nothing complicated about the plot or anything we haven't seen before, and the climax is predictable and simplistic. But there are many laughs in the film. Towards the end, it subtly depicts the winds of change when Rocky's parents ask for Rani's hand in marriage, saying they want their son to be Chatterjee's love interest instead of asking their daughter to be his bahus. Basically, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a fun and beautiful love story with striking and vibrant characters, well wrapped for us in a shiny package. And yet it's all about loving your family.
