Vaathi Movie Review
Vaathi Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story: Despite the educational policies of the 1990s, assistant mathematics professors undertake the arduous task of teaching disadvantaged students.
The story of a simple man rising to become the savior of society always works in film, especially when it has the right elements. It looks like it, but the film's central theme is so strong and represents a cause that it's totally acceptable.
Review: Vaathi begins in the present tense and traces back to a mysterious figure being unraveled from an old VCD tape by a group of three students. We learn that that person is Bala (Dhanush) and he was an assistant math teacher caught in the turmoil of the privatization of education in the 90s. He must prove himself in an abandoned public school with no parental or administrative support.
How he overcame all odds and transformed the lives of underprivileged students through his education forms the backbone of the story.
The Decline and Rise of Social Reformers This template is a universal recipe for success, but it all depends on how you use it. Director Venky Atluri manages to tick most of the boxes to present a commercially empowering film. Vaathi isn't an exceptional film because it has bigger than life moments at times, but it tries to keep the audience's heartbeat with good builds and payouts.
Vaathi's USP is his Dhanush and its Effortless performance and on-screen presence. The sequences in which he develops innovative ideas for educating his students are both funny and thoughtful. When he talks about social equality, some of the dialogue is strong enough to have lasting effect.Samukta Menon, who plays the Dhanush couple and biology teacher, is refreshing and does the job properly. Ken Karunas has done an impressive job and other students deserve mention. The chemistry between Samyuktha and Dhanush works. It's also great that Venky doesn't stray too far from the core plot by incorporating romance into such a serious subject.
However, the writer could have done without some supposedly comedic sequences in the first half, as they don't make the audience laugh. Also, instead of having everything after the break, he could have introduced the conflict between the forces of evil and the forces of good a little earlier. The protagonist could have handled these situations a little more effectively and intelligently for greater impact.
Samtullakani plays a typical villain, though less menacing, with few sequences showing his wickedness. Technically the film is solid and the music by GV Prakash complements the film. Background by the acclaimed composer His score helps evoke a certain emotion, and the song "Adi Aathi" sets the perfect mood in his opening sequence.
Overall, Vaathi is a fact-based film that could have been done better.
