A History of the Polite Society: A delightful British comedy about a young girl who sets out to save her sister from an arranged marriage. Polite Society
Review: British television writer and director Nida Mansur's debut feature film, The Polite Society is set in British-Pakistani communities and features traditional but easy-going parents, a rebellious daughter and their bond and one of them is tested by agreeing to an arranged marriage. And others vow to save her.The film's hilarity and characters are highly contagious. Once introduced, you'll want to know what they plan to do next. Ria (Priya Kansara) is an overzealous teenager who is shocked to learn that her beloved older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) has agreed to an arrangement with dashing doctor Salim (Akshaye Khanna) for her marriage. Except for Leah, who suspects there's something wrong with Salim and his stuffy mother, Lahila (Nimra Bucha), most people are skeptical that Salim would be a good match for Lena, an art school dropout. Agree. Leah, a martial artist with limited mastery of her powers, and her loyal friends Clara (Serafinabe) and Alba (Ela Bruccolelli) hatch a plan to save Lena. Will they pull it off or will everyone be ready to slap their faces in the face for this stunt? A whole new twist on teenage comedy. But the narration alternates between chilling humor and laugh-out-loud moments. The Khan sisters' emotional intimacy pulls at your heart, even if some scenes where they fight like they're in a boxing ring are a little over the top. Sisters quarrel, but this way? It's hard to believe. Like most comedy movies, the first half of Polite Society is simply hilarious. Preparations for a lavish South Asian wedding dominate the second half and the pace slows down. Even the huge reveal that culminated in leveled off, which is a huge disappointment. But Ria's rendition of the song Maar Daala from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002) is the highlight. She will grab your attention and make you laugh endlessly. Priya Kansala's no-nonsense performance brings the film to life with her feisty Leah. Her dialogue is witty and her clumsiness is infectious throughout her 103-minute film. Ritu Aria plays Lena well, but her character isn't as fleshed out as Lea's. Jeff Mirza and Shobu Kapoor do well as relaxed parents. Ella Bruccoleri is hilarious as Alba she's ready for anything but doesn't know what to do. She also enjoys seeing Clara from Serafinabe. Akshaye Khanna looks stunning as Salim. But it's Nimura Bucha who shines as her mother in her fantastically demonic avatar.
