BLOODY DADDY Review: A Psychedelic Trippy Ride From Start To Finish

BLOODY DADDY Movie Rating: 7/10 ⭐

What it's about: Undercover cop Sumer (Shahid Kapoor) is blackmailed into returning the cocaine he confiscated after his son is kidnapped by  notorious drug lord Sikander (Ronit Roy) after he uncovers drug trafficking in Gurugram.

Flashback: To get his son back, Smale must take action not only against criminals, but also the police officers who are after him at the DEA. The kidnapping of his son causes this high-functioning, alcoholic rogue cop to act like an assassin capable of destroying anything  in his sight.

Farj and now Bloody Daddy… Shahid Kapoor is on the move. Of all the commercial Hindi movie heroes, none are more interesting than OTT's Shahid. It's clear that the actor has let go of his fears, his position in the industry, and released a wild side that gives him the freedom to vent his stress. I can almost hear Kabir Singh's "Wada wow wow wada wow wow" song in my head as Smale walks in in a black John Wick-esque blazer with murderous intent. The actor  nailed the eccentric alpha male  and it's extremely satisfying to see him enjoying it. Despite his relatively petite stature and handsome image living next door, he's got all that ridiculously funny and violent personality.

Based on the French film Nuit Blanche (2011), director Ali Abbas Zafar's neo-noir his-action his-thriller is outrageous from start to finish. The entire film is shot in a hotel in  Abu Dhabi  (portrayed as Gurugram) during the corona crisis and revolves around a duffel bag containing drugs and their delivery. Two other police officers (Diana Penty and Rajeev Kandelwal) are monitoring Sumeru's actions and have their own missions. Unsuspecting hotel staff and guests are caught in a mad web of cops vs. cops, cops vs. criminals, criminals vs. criminals. Who corrupts and who has the bigger game determines the narrative.

You'll love Bloody He's Daddy for the same reason you love Brad Pitt's action-comedy Super Express or the Coen brothers' idiosyncratic Dark He loves comedy. It's silly, quirky, dramatic and hilarious. The camerawork and well-choreographed stylized action (knives, guns, fistfights, etc.) will keep audiences glued to their seats and  wonder why this isn't a theatrical release. Given the COVID-19 situation, the unintentional humor works well  and helps set the pace. However, the second half seems a bit static as the action overshadows the humor. The plot is also pretty predictable. Bloody Daddy doesn't take himself too seriously. This is an unpretentious action-crime thriller that is ridiculously funny,  brutal and daring.
