Satyaprem Ki Katha film review: Kartik kaj Kiara Prem Katha pri diemek katharsis kui distro

Satyaprem Ki Katha Movie Rating: 6/10 ⭐

Story: It's love at first sight for Satyaprem aka Sattu (Kartik Aaryan) when he sees Katha (Kiara Advani), a beautiful and aspiring singer from a rich Gujarati family in Ahmedabad. But their love story is not as simple as Sattu would have imagined.

Review: A failed law degree, no job, no friends, and constant jokes from his land-behen (as he likes to call them) at home, Satyaprem's life is far from ideal, but that never changes the toothy smile  he wears. confidence no matter what. Her father (Gajraj Rao) is her only friend who understands her. He adores her when her son falls in love with the first girl he sets his eyes on - the stunningly beautiful Katha, who, apart from being  out of her league, also has an equally rich boyfriend. But Sattu finds a glimmer of hope when her gossipy father known as Panchayati Kaka brings her the good news that Kathan Prem kahani and her boyfriend are over for good. Armed with a smile and unconditional love for Katha, Sattu walks forward to confess his love for her without bothering to discover the reasons behind the breakup. And just then, a new chapter opens  in his doomed one-sided love story for a girl with a big secret. To reveal anything more  about the plot would be a definite spoiler. But let's just say that Satyaprem ki Katha is not the kind of film one would expect from what was seen in the trailer. Far from being a tickle comedy that showcases the best talent in Gujarati and Indian cinema, this film is punk, dirty and carries a strong message. The film falters at the level of a script that is laborious and  stuck in a chain of recurring conflicts. Writer Karan Shrikant Sharma presents some socio-cultural comedies and looks at typical Gujarati families and their staples like dhokla, khakra and gota. But the overall theme of the film is dedicated to bringing home a social message. At the same time, the story often drags  scenes that do not benefit the most talents. Kartik Aarayn once again wears his heart on his sleeve and flashes  pearly whites  more than required  playing the simple Sattu who believes the truth because "sach bolne se Pehle sochna kya". It cannot be denied that playing the boy next door is Kartik's core strength and once again he does it with immense ease. He is so easy to root for, even though his Gujarati accent is all over the place. Somehow it's endearing and goes along with his weak loser nature. Kiara Advani has a tougher role to play here. There is an unspoken feeling in a Katha story that needs to be understood and the actor gets the accent and  feel of the character right. Kiara gives a brilliant and understated performance in a challenging role, a career best. Director Sameer Vidwans and his writers give their women a voice by showing us an unusual middle-class family in Ahmedabad where the women not only run the house but also make sure the men are well aware of the profoundly non-patriarchal dynamic. But there are also dialogues like "aap pe aise sau baidiyan qurbaan" as Sattu says to his father, which is completely against the message of the film. But even in such uneven dialogues, a couple of talented character actors like Gajraj Rao, Supriya Pathak and Siddharth Randeria deliver their roles with complete conviction. Rajpal Yadav is completely wasted in a cameo that had  huge potential to make a good cartoon. The  music of the film (Manan Bhardwaj and Payal Dev) blends well with the story and is quite melodious. Sung by Arijit Singh and Tulsi Kumar, Shae Gill and Ali Seth's remake of the OG Pakistani hit 'Pasoor' fails to leave a  lasting impression. Cinematographer Ayananka Bose captures the essence of the cosmopolitan yet conventional atmosphere of Ahmedabad quite beautifully.  Satyprem Ki Katha is driven by the need to preach and give a message. The subject moves you and leaves you with a lot to think about, but it tends to take a more emotional path than a funny one.
