Spy Movie Review: There is no suspense in this spy story

Spy Movie Rating: 5/10 ⭐

Story: Jai (Nikhil Siddhartha) is a RAW agent whose mission is not only to  save the country but also to find his brother's killer. Will he find the answers he's looking for?

Review: Editor Garry BH, known for his excellent work in films like Ghazi, Goodachari and  HIT films, will direct with SPY. While his ideas  seem fun and sometimes even novel on paper, the execution is unfortunately a mess that doesn't always come together well. Jai Vardhan (Nikhil Siddhartha) is a RAW agent looking for answers. His brother Subhash (Aryan Rajesh) was declared dead during the mission and his family was not the same afterwards. The head of RAW (Makrand Deshpande) sends him and his loyal friend Kamal (Abhinav Gomatam) on a mission to find Kadhir Khan (Nithin Mehta), a dead terrorist who is considered a threat to the country. They are accompanied on this mission by Saraswati (Sanya Thakur) and  his ex-girlfriend (Iswarya Menon) is a thorn in his Jai's side. Also missing are the files related to Subhash Chandra Bose, which contain secrets that the state has so far kept under wraps. If this all  sounds like a lot - that's because it really is!

The way Garry starts the movie, you expect Jai to have moments where he's torn between wanting to serve his country and finding his brother's killer. However, this rarely happens. His brother's death is mostly used as a catalyst to galvanize him  when needed. The files of Subhash Chandra Bose and the Battle of Kohima are unique, but are casually explained  in  action-packed scenes. The villain is introduced too late in the story for you to care, and his placeholder doesn't seem all that threatening. Basically, many ideas in the film never reach their limits because there are  too many  to begin with. Amidst the  honey hunt, body doubles, kidnapping of scientists etc, the only one who seems to be having fun is Abhinav Gomatam who is ticklishly hilarious with his one liners. The film works under tension. You can predict many twists but the movie will hold your attention for some time. The love story throws a spanner in the works with unintentionally funny scenes. There's also a strange lack of urgency to how everything happens, even when you know time is passing. The writing should have been clearer and better.  Nikhil seems sincere, he  seems to have worked hard even in the action sequences, but Garry doesn't really exploit him. Rana plays a cameo where he shines a lot in front of the camera. Abhinav really gets  the  balance right between jokes and shooting guns. Iswarya, Sanya, Makrand and others do not really appear. Vishal Chandrasekhar's Jhoom Jhoom is okay but the background music besides Sricharan's Pakalan Azaad helps the film well. The cinematography by Vamsi Patchipulusu, Mark David, Julian Amaru Estrada and Keiko Nakahara is quite good and the editing is excellent. The stunts are strangely good, except for one shot in the rain.  SPY comes at a time when you have seen different permutations and combinations of the same story told in different ways with different motifs in multiple languages. The heart of Garry's film is in the right place, but it lacks the enthusiasm to stand out.
